At Morningside Community Church... We seek to offer a fun, upbeat, yet sincere worship experience
that invites the worshipper to fully engage with their Creator and Savior.
We have two services on Sunday mornings: Worship I at 9am
Worship II at 10:30am
Currently, our musical style is the typical, acoustic guitar led "5-piece band”,
although we’re ALWAYS OPEN to having other instruments join us!
(And in case you’re not sure what a 5-piece band is...
it has nothing to do with fried chicken, or any other food for that matter!
It means the band has an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a bass, a keyboard, and drums.)
The Worship Ministry is made up of 4 different main groups or teams;
each team is important to the full worship experience and each responsible for a different aspect
of running the worship services at Morningside Community Church. The 4 teams are...
the Music Team – Leading worship for Morningside’s regular Sunday morning worship services,
Elevate – the student ministry’s Sunday evening service, Engage – the college ministry’s midweek service,
and other various special events (weddings, funerals, holidays, camps, retreats, conferences, etc…)
the Sound Team – Live mixing/recording of Morningside’s worship services,
CD duplication, CD/ mp3 online publishing, etc…
the Multi-Media Team – Designing, creating and running all visual presentations for
our various worship services (announcements, song lyrics, sermon notes, video clips),
videotaping services, DVD duplication/publishing, etc…
the Drama Team – Creating, writing and performing all dramatic presentations
(sermon illustrations, announcements, skits, special holiday performances and other events),
including set and costume design.
Sweetragedy is the name our band uses when we are leading worship for Elevate (our Student Ministry), Engage (our College Ministry) or for any other groups or events outside of Morningside Community Church.
The name Sweetragedy refers to the belief that, Jesus Christ dying on the cross to take away the sins of humanity, while simultaneously restoring humanity to a relationship with God...was both the best and worst event in human history! In other words, that one event was both the sweetest and the most tragic event of all time!
Therefore, the nameSweetragedy refers to both the blessing that came to us through Christ's sacrifice... while also acknowledging the worst decision humans have ever made, that is, murdering our own Savior!
And there is the irony...for though we committed such a vile act towards God, it was through that very act (the crucifixion of Jesus) that God chose to save us! Justice and Mercy collided and caused an eternal shift in human history! The sweetness of God's love overpowered the tragedy of human wisdom...and we are forever changed!
Tim started Sweetragedy back in the fall of 2001. He loves to write music, loves to sing and play his guitar and for some reason he loves to put his hair into a silly faux hawk…I don’t know, I think he thinks it makes him look like some cool modern rocker or something. “Just spikin’ your hair isn’t going to make you sing or play like Chris Tomlinor Lincoln BrewsterTimbo!”
Whatever.
Tim is married and has kids.
Favorites:Spiky haired worship leaders Hates: Flat hair and writing his own bio Hobbies: Spending a lot of time making his hair look messy, watching documentaries Quotes:“Are you recording this?”, “Is this going to be off the record?”, to the band at rehearsal, “So, did you get a chance to listen to the new song I posted?”, and to the congregation on a Sunday morning, “We’re going to teach you a new song today that I just taught the band this morning!” Other Facts: Tim wrote all of this himself and, apparently, doesn’t take bios seriously at all!
Also, Tim hates referring to himself in the first person.
Dan loves Caribou Coffee, NOT Starbucks(eww! Bleeccchhh!)
Although not proven, one might argue that Dan likes coffee more than he loves drums.
He also loves people and it shows (in his smile!) When he’s not playing drums or drinking coffee, Dan works as a Christian Counselor on staff at Morningside Community Church. Well, ok, fine…sometimes he drinks coffee while he works.
In addition to playing drums with Sweetragedy, Dan can also be found adding his bodacious rhythms to the surf rock and jazz stylings of Sonic Screwdriver, a local band here in Brookings, SD.
Dan is married to Lisa and they have two boys, Cody and Trevor.
Favorites: Coffee and Drums (or Drums and Coffee) Hates: Wearing pants instead of shorts and long sleeve shirts instead of t-shirts; the beautiful sound of a sitar; the continually poor screening process for CTU employees Hobbies: Playing basketball; not wearing long pants (so enjoy this rare picture because it is…rare!); trying to take over the Tri-State area Quotes:“Your timing is impeccable…and by ‘impeccable’ I mean COMPLETY PECCABLE!” Other Facts: Dan owns 9 full drum kits, plus many other various rhythm/percussion instruments.
Growing up in Brookings, Erin has attended Morningside Community Church her whole life.
She has been playing the piano since her early childhood and has been involved with the worship team since 1999.
Erin is married to Jesse and they have two girls, Quinn and Claire.
Favorites: Traveling all over the Greater Brookings County (she’s even been known to sneak a quick visit to other cities within the South Dakota border. Look out!);
Erin also likes Gabriel's Horn. Hates:Irregular equations; and that uneasy feeling you get when you drive a certain number of miles outside of the Brookings County line. Hobbies:Working up insanely difficult math problems to confuse people with; and celebrating Pi Day (that would be March 14th for all of you non-math people.) Quotes:“Ok. But, can you solve this one…?” Other Facts:Erin’s daughters make four generations of family members that attend Morningside Community Church on any given Sunday.
He also doesn’t have long hair anymore…but I've always liked this picture of him, so I put it here! (To see a more current picture of his shorter haircut, click here or hereor hereor hereor hereor hereor hereor here.) Ricky, a.k.a “Mr. Ganci” teaches English at Brookings High Schooland is also pursuing his Master’s Degree at South Dakota State University. He can also be found laying down some wicked, phat tones as the bass player for the local favorite surf rock band, Sonic Screwdriver.
Ricky married his college sweetheart Marissa Ganci and they now have a cat.
Phavorites: Base Ball; good literature (not the crappy stuff); Mountain Dew and hot chocolate Hates: Lousy books filled with non-sensical drivel; run-on sentences; inaccurate usage of grammar and punctuation; and football Hobbies: Playing Call of Dutytill 4am; and pontificating on the finer points of Base Ball Quotes:“Hello Friendship!”, and “Would an idiot do that?” (See Ricky's Facebook profile for full context) Other Phacts: Ricky grew up a stone’s throw away from the Metrodome (the Twins’ former base ball stadium)...which is a stone's throw away from Target Field (the Twins' current base ball stadium).
We are always hoping to add more people to our worship team!

Or, maybe you like to dabble in graphic design, or you love to express your talents through acting in dramas and skits!

Favorites: People who love God, first and foremost, and love to use their talents & abilites to assist others in expressing their own love for God. Hates: When people who have talents & abilities do not use what God has given them to bless others and inspire more people to worship God. Hobbies: Playing music, singing, using technology, acting, dancing, designing, painting, drawing or doing anything creative with other creatively-minded followers of God. Quotes:“God doesn't ask us to be perfect at what we do...He simply asks us to serve!” -- Pastor Tim Bariteau Other Facts: If you join the Worship Ministry at Morningside, in any capacity, you WILL be blessed!
There’s nothing Ernie can’t fix. Go ahead, think of something. Nope. He can fix that. Yup. He can fix that, too! See, I told you!
Well, in addition to just being an amazing guy Ernie sings beautifully and has blessed many people with his voice for years! When he’s not singing at church on Sunday morning, you can probably find him singing a concert somewhere in the Greater Brookings area.

Sandy doesn’t just sing…she listens, too! And she can do it real good! She is a Licensed Professional Christian Counselor on staff at Morningside Community Church (EDIFY: Counseling & Coaching Center) and she has helped many people. I know, because she helped me get over my fear of writing bios for other people!

He graduated from Brookings High School (class of '05) and his English teacher during senior year was none other than Mr. Ricky Ganci! He later became a Diesel Mechanic after graduating from Lake Area Technical Institutein Watertown, SD.
In addition to joining the worship team in early 2005 and serving faithfully by running sound almost every Sunday since then, Darby has also led the SD State Church of God's "Junior Camp" for 4th - 6th grade students since 2007.

Or, maybe you love graphic designing, photograpy or video editing?
Do you have a passion for acting
and doing theatrical performances?
We are always looking for more people to get involved with the Worship Ministry!
Whether that’s as...
a musician or vocalist in the band...
a sound tech to run the mixer and
all the equipment in the sound booth...
a computer guru to help design, produce
and run the slides/videos
and other multi-media presentations...
or someone who has a heart for doing dramas, skits and other live performances!
If you are interested in learning how you can
get involved and serve with the Worship Ministry, please don’t hesitate to contact Pastor Tim Bariteau! (He’s kind of slow and doesn’t always recognize
the obvious, so please don’t be offended
if he hasn’t already come up to you
to personally ask for your assistance!
Trust me, he needs your help!!!)
We believe that worship is not simply “singing a song” or a style of music, but a lifestyle we live, in which every moment and every action is attempt to love, honor and please God. In other words, “worship” is simply the expression of our love for God! Having said that, however, sometimes the expression of our worship may be done through music and singing. In fact, the Bible clearly tells us that we are to sing (Psalm 47:6–7; 95:1–7;) and play music (Psalm 33:2–3) as worship to the Lord. But, the Bible also names many other various ways that we can worship God…most of them having nothing to do with music!
Here are some to get you thinking (and worshipping):
You can worship God by SINGING, PLAYING MUSIC, SPEAKING (Psalm 45:1), ADORING Him, giving Him the GLORY He deserves.
You can also worship God through various outward gestures, such as,DANCING (Exodus 15:20; Psalm 149:3; Jeremiah 31:4), CLAPPING (Psalm 47:1, Isaiah 55:12), JUMPING (Psalm 28:7; Song of Songs 2:8; Isaiah 35:6; Luke 1:41,44; 6:23; Acts 3:8), SPINNING/TWIRLING (II Samuel 6:16), CREATING ART (Exodus 31:2-14), SHOUTING PRAISES (Leviticus 9:24; Job 8:21; 33:26; Psalm 27:6; 33:3; 35:27; 42:4; 47:1; 71:23; 81:1; 95:1; 98:4; Isaiah 12:6), RAISING/EXTENDING YOUR HANDS (Genesis 14:22; I Kings 8:54), KNEELING (II Chronicles 7:3; Psalm 95:6; Acts 21:5), BOWING (Genesis 24:26, 48, 52; Exodus 4:31; Psalm 95:6), LYING PROSTRATEon the ground (Deuteronomy 9:18, 25; I Kings 18:39; I Chronicles 29:20) or in some way humbly showing Him the respect He is due.
You can worship God by FASTING (Deuteronomy 9:18; Nehemiah 9:1; Jeremiah 36:9; Daniel 9:3; Joel 2:12; Matthew 6:18; Luke 2:37; Acts 13:2; 14:23).
You can worship God by SEEKING HIS FACE, or FACING HIM (Psalm 27:8; Isaiah 54:8; II Corinthians 3:18), or in other words, by giving Him your FULL ATTENTION!
You can worship God by BEING SILENT and MEDITATING (Joshua 1:8; I Samuel 1:12-15; Psalm 48:9; 77:12; Habakkuk 2:20; Zechariah 2:13;).
You can worship God by TITHING and GIVING OFFERINGS (Matthew 6:19-21; II Corinthians 8:2-4; 9:27; Acts 4:32) and by being OBEDIENT(I Samuel 15:22; John 14:15, 21, 23-24, II John 1:6).
You can worship God by WORKING and SERVING (Psalm 2:11; 72:11; 100:2; Isaiah 56:6; Matthew 25:40; John 12:26; Galatians 5:13; Hebrews 12:28) in whatever area you are gifted or talented; whether it’s natural talents or learned abilities.
When we study the Bible we learn that it really doesn’t matter what action you take, worship is simply an expression of love! So, whatever you do, wherever you are, if your attitude and motivation is one of love for God…you’re worshipping Him!
You can fold the laundry for your spouse or make a sandwich for your child and by serving them, if you are doing it out of joy and love…that’s an act of worship!
You can paint a picture or sculpt a statue out of clay and if you’re doing it with a desire to express your love for God…that’s an act of worship!
You can write a check to your church as a tithe or send money to support a cause or a missionary overseas and if you’re doing it because you’ve been so blessed by how much God loves you…that’s an act of worship!
You can sit silently watching the sunrise, admiring the beauty of His creation while pondering the fact that the very same God Who created all of this, is the same God we read about in the Bible and He loves us…that’s an act of worship!
You can jump, dance and spin in circles because you’re so overwhelmed by the realization of how much God loves you that you don’t know what else to do…that’s an act of worship!
Any form or expression of our love for God is an act of worship, including, but not limited to just music!
So, worship God today! In whatever talents or abilities He’s given you, express back to Him your gratitude! Find new ways to show Him how much you love Him! And remember, Jesus said, “Whatever you do for the least of these, you do for Me!” (Matthew 25:31–46) So, go show God you love Him…by loving other people! When you see someone else, just think to yourself, “That’s Jesus with skin on!” And then, don’t hesitate to love them, serve them and bend over backwards to meet their needs…because in doing so, you’re worshipping God!
